TRACTOR SALES PLOUGH ON A FERTILE GROUND
Article Abstract:
The tractor segment of the automobile industry recorded a 2.7 percent growth in sales at 187,673 units during April-December 1998. It is expected to achieve a 25 percent growth in 1998-99 (15 percent growth in 1997-98). Punjab Tractors, which holds 19 percent market share, sold 34,704 tractors during April-December 1998. Mahindra & Mahindra, with a market share of more than 27 percent, recorded 2 percent increase in its sales at 50,568 tractors. Eicher registered 5 percent growth at 17,762 tractors (16,910 units sold during April-December 1997). The sales of HMT were 11,560 tractors (13,400 units). (gs) (kvr)

HMT TO RAISE TRACTOR OUTPUT

HMT Ltd (HMTL) has decided to increase the production capacity of its tractor division. HMTL plans to invest Rs16 crore to increase tractor capacity from 20,000 to 26,000 by March 1999. The capacity is to be increased by 4,000 by March 2000 AD. HMT had invested Rs16 crore in 1997-98 on machinery for its tractor unit. Its market share has declined to 8 percent. In 1997-98, the tractor division posted a net profit of Rs32.45 crore on sales of Rs404.97 crore. It has projected a sales of Rs500 crore for 1998- 99. (rk)

Punjab Tractor has increased its net profit by 42.5 percent to Rs58.7 crore in the first half of 1998-99. Its net sales grew to Rs445.30 crore in the first half of 1998-99 against Rs360.30 crore in the first half of 1997-98. The company's total revenues increased by 23.2 percent during April-June 1998. Its Swaraj brand of tractors posted sales of 10,514 units in July-September 1998 compared to 9,623 units in July-September 1997. (khr)
