TRADING SENTIMENTS DEFY RESULTS
Article Abstract:
The 2-wheeler industry in India has been posting a 10 percent growth but foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been offloading these scrips due to the poor outlook of the Indian economy. Bajaj Auto (BA) achieved a 15.7 percent growth on month- over-month (MOM) basis in scooters and a 10.2 percent growth on a year-on-year (YOY) basis. The growth in motorcycles segment was 25.9 percent on MOM basis corresponding to 26.2 percent on YOY basis. Total 2-wheeler sales are expected to grow by 10 percent in 1998-99 and net profit will remain good due to the other income. The volumes of LML, another 2-wheeler producer, is growing by 10 percent and holds 29 percent of the market share. LML commissioned its expanded capacity due to which its interest and depreciation charges were higher by Rs3 crore each. The launching of the Sensation model resulted in its good performance in 1997-98. LML's foray into the motorcycle segment may be delayed due to its dispute with Piaggio. (uh)
