MONSANTO LINES UP BIG PLAN FOR INDIA
Article Abstract:
Monsanto Company, a life sciences major of the US, says that it has major biotechnology plans for India. It will be opening its $5 million research centre at Bangalore in March 1999. The centre will work on rice, cotton, corn, sugarcane, oilseed rape, floriculture and insect control. Monsanto says that it wishes to put the Terminator Gene controversy behind it. It is now doing research and development work on the next two products slated for the Indian market - Round Up Ready Soyabean and Asian Corn Borer Resistant Corn. It is also working on Round Up Ready Sugarcane which will increase the output of sugar and valuable nutrients from the plant. (khr)

IOC PLANS TO SUPPLY POWER DIRECTLY TO CONSUMERS
Article Abstract:
The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is a leading oil company. It plans to diversify into the power sector. It proposes to sign a direct power sales agreement with its consumers, thereby becoming the first independent power producer to offer power directly to the consumer. IOC plans to invest around Rs7,000 crore for installing a generation capacity of 1,750 mw. It intends to set up power plants at Haldia in West Bengal, Panipat in Haryana, Kosi Kalan in Uttar Pradesh, Salvi in Gujarat and Bhatinda in Punjab. The proposed plants will be using residue fuels.
