Taiwan's growth slows
Article Abstract:
Taiwan hit its weakest numbers in three decades with its first-quarter economic growth results. Unemployment has risen to nearly 4% this April, and analysts predict a 5% decrease in overall corporate earnings this year for Taiwan, the lowest level in Asia. Global interest-rate cuts and the weakening of Taiwanese currency, however, could help boost the economy.

Cash-rich Taiwan companies are attractive targets
Article Abstract:
Taiwanese stock prices are near historic lows, with little hope of quick upturn, but investors may find the stocks attractive because Taiwanese companies often have lots of cash. Spencer White of Merrill Lynch in Taiwan says that notebook computer maker Inventec Corp. and automotive firm China Motor Corp. are among those firms with large cash reserves. Acquiring a controlling stake in such companies in order to get at the cash could be difficult, however, and the investor would have to be certain that the underlying assets of a firm were factored into the analysis properly.
