France has allowed the issuance of tourist visas from the French Institute, the country's representative office in Taiwan. The move is seen as an effort by France to improve its diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Observers believe than France is eyeing a larger share of Taiwanese projects and a substantial increase in weapon sales to the Asian country. French representatives opined that the country still lags behind other countries that have no diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Despite have set the pace for improved Taiwanese relations, France is still hoping to establish strong ties with China.

Out of view, out of touch: Beijing, Taipei museums look on with envy

The new museum in Shanghai, China, is being looked on with envy by its counterparts in Beijing and Taipei. Beijing's National Palace Museum is able to display only a tiny proportion of the treasures it houses and even these are often unaccessible and difficult to see. In Taipei, similar problems are faced by the National Palace Museum, which is primarily a secure storage area for thousands of royal treasures. It is unlikely that the high standards set by the new Shanghai Museum can be reached by those in Beijing and Taipei, but its opening could be a catalyst for change.
