Counting the global cost
Article Abstract:
New buildings at Linacre College, Oxford University have been designed energy conservation both in terms of energy use and the energy implications of the materials used in construction. The student accomodation building uses high levels of insulation, passive solar heating and low energy equipment to keep energy consumption to a minimum. Building materials were analysed for the embodied energy used in their production and transportation. Low embodied energy was achieved by minimising the use of plastics and using recycled and renewable materials.

How to let in the light
Article Abstract:
Two new guides to daylight design continue the work done on this subject since 1968. BS 8206: Part 2: Code of Practice for Daylighting and Pilkington Glass's 'Glass and Solar Heat Gains' are intended to be used in conjunction with other guides to give a comprehensive coverage of the subject. However the guides use different methods of assessing sunlight which could lead to confusion. Standardised assessment procedures should be devised.

Passive design
Article Abstract:
Passive design is designing for environental control by selectively allowing elements from the exterior to enter the building. The use of orientation, glazing, wiindows and so on is termed passive beacuse there are no moving parts, thus saving further energy resources.
