Talk boosts Cathay shares: some bet airline's fortunes likely to soar
Article Abstract:
Investor confidence is returning to Cathay Pacific Airways, as evidenced by the high volume of the company's stocks traded at the Hong Kong exchange. The bullish outlook on Cathay stems from its planned alliance with British Airways, a move seen by investors and analysts alike as something that would turn the airline away from its ailing financial performance. Cathay is expected to post a loss for 1998, after posting profits of HK$1.7 bil ($219.4 mil) in 1997. Cathay experienced a 13% increase in share prices in July, with its shares trading at HK$6.15 from HK$5.45.
