Skills-based pay at Bass Tavern
Article Abstract:
Bass Taverns has adopted a merit-based pay system under which its 38,000 employees will not automatically receive annual pay increases, but will be eligible for raises as they acquire more skills. Because pubs are open long hours and have a variety of staff positions, Bass felt that cross-training was needed. Upon validation of the learning of certain skills, employees can move up in salary until reaching the Gold level, at which their tasks will mimic a managers. Managers are offered profit sharing if they are successful, as well as raises tied to performance.
