Wangari Maathai, Kenyan environmentalist, feminist, human rights activist and educator, and the winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace prize, was originally a veterinarian. Maathai's enthusiasm in protecting the environment of Kenya by starting the Green Belt Movement and other such activities landed her with the responsibility of serving as the Assistant Minister for the environment in charge of natural resources and wildlife.

Social status is attributed to those who create a special recipe and become known for a dish that no one can imitate. Recipes created by five women distinguish them in their communities for the dishes' uniqueness and special flavors. These women, Nancy Linehan, Gina Pfeiffer, Ruby Davis, Helen Kent, and Mary Encinger, may not have national fame, but they enjoy a special status in their respective communities.
