Pakistan's record deficit
Article Abstract:
A record deficit of Rs 89 billion was proposed by Pakistan's Finance Minister Sartaj Aziz in his budget statement while also instituting several tax reforms. The country's thin direct-tax base makes cutting the deficit, which constitutes 5% of the GDP, difficult. The tax reforms include a sales tax at the retail level to counteract smuggling, taxing formerly tax-exempt military and police welfare foundations and raising excise duties and other levies on certain goods and services. Furthermore, companies have been guaranteed gradual income-tax reductions over the next five years.
