The organic self builder
Article Abstract:
The new Middle Wood study centre at Middle Wood, UK, is an energy efficient building with nothing expensive or wasteful in its design or construction. The Middle Wood charitable trust was set up by Dr Rod Everett and his wife Jane, to further education and research into ecologically sound methods of construction, energy management, forestry, farming and wildlife conservation. The study centre, which is now nearly finished, has minimal running costs since it relies on resources such as wind and solar power and spring water. The design of the centre and Everett's future plans are further discussed.

Pulling the ponytails
Article Abstract:
Jim Ramsbottom is a bookmaker from Manchester, England who is financing the redevelopment of derelict waterside buildings in the Manchester docks area. Ramsbottom ridicules the pretentiousness of most architects but has commissioned Roger Stephenson to convert warehouses into offices in the Eastgate Complex. He is passionate about restoring the old buildings to use and believes the best way is to attract artistic people to the area. Ramsbotton himself grew up in the slums and made his fortune from bookmaking.

Taking architects to market
Article Abstract:
Gilbert Toppin is a management consultant working for Touche Ross on a study of the British architectural profession. The 'Strategic Study of the Profession' was commissioned by the Royal association of British Architects and follows the 1962 study, 'The Architect and His Office.' Toppin, who trained as an engineer, is concerned that the study produces something of practical use to architects. He believes British architects are not trained to look at market opportunities or to adapt to client's requirements.
