Many companies make acquisition and merger decisions simply on the basis of the financial performance of a potential partner or takeover target. This approach gives no information about a company's culture and its ability to complement the style of the company with which it is to become linked. It is worth undertaking a cultural audit, beginning with a photograph which clearly shows the existing styles of the companies involved. In this way, it will be easier to manage cultural differences which will inevitably arise.

BrightReasons owns the Pizza Piazza, Bella Pasta and Pizzaland brand restaurant chains, with Whitbread a key acquiror target because of its recognised expansion plans. The acquisition allowed Whitbread to become the UK's leading restaurateur with a wide range of brands, including the Pelican Group's Dome and Cafe Rouge brands.
