Telecom firms forecast earnings boost in merger

Telecom Italia SpA and Deutsche Telekom AG announced that cost savings from their proposed merger would lead to a rise in the new company's pretax earnings. Both firms said that the newly-merged entity would see its pretax earnings grow by as much as 1.6 million euros ($1.69 billion) by the year 2003. Telecom Italia and Deutsche Telekom are attempting to win support for their planned merger.
