Teleconferencing: a long-heralded technology that is finally finding users
Article Abstract:
A number of examples exist of instances where the use of a video-conferencing system was able to pay for itself the first time the company used it, but such occurrences are the exception rather than the rule. Video-conferencing has received more publicity but much less actual use than teleconferencing systems, but the advantages provided by both are beginning to be used on an increasing basis by corporations having to deal regularly over great distances, saving on travel costs and delivering information much more quickly while providing a much higher degree of interaction than possible with other electronic communications techniques. Examples of several different systems in use throughout Europe, the U.S. and Asia are described, emphasizing the private systems available.

'Fortress Europe' finally takes shape
Article Abstract:
An autumn 1987 International Management magazine reader survey drew 825 responses to questions concerning the preparation of Europe for open economic borders. Responses indicate broad support in the business community among the senior executive readers, polled from 12 European Community countries. Sixty percent of respondents favor the concept of a United States of Europe, 73 percent approve of eliminating their national currencies for a true European one, and 18 percent already employ European Currency Units in business arrangements. Eighty-four percent of respondents who believe that a unified European market cannot be maintained see as a major obstacle the inability to subjugate member states' national needs to those of the community.

Crack divisions
Article Abstract:
A fictional case of a flawed executive search is presented. In recruiting executives to help solve the company's problems, their capabilities to do just that should be carefully scrutinized. Even if the right people were tapped, CEOs should never expect that the new recruits would be able to deal with the problems all by themselves. Strategic planning requires working together towards the formulation of solutions, instead of dumping the company's burden on to the new people.
