Templeton Japan Fund's return lags

Lipper Analytical Services Inc. reports that the Franklin Templeton Japan Fund's returns are lagging behind that of portfolios of other US investment companies. Analysts have pointed to the Yen's decline and rise as instrumental in increasing returns for investment companies. Templeton Fund manager William Howard acknowledges that the portfolio has performed poorly for the meantime but long term investments may offset current results.

Managers brace Asia portfolios for a rough third period

A Lipper Analytical Services Inc. survey of mutual funds in the Asian region reveals that fund managers will be focusing in the Chinese market during the third quarter of 1997. The report also states that fund managers predict that losses in the Southeast Asian market will continue during this period and that the third quarter of 1997 will be difficult for them in the industry as Asian portfolios have a large level of cash flow.

Investment in India gains popularity: fund managers to boost portfolios, but near-term view isn't rosiest
Article Abstract:
Mutual fund managers are beginning to see India as one of the most promising markets in Asia as market liberalization, lowered interest rates and stable inflation rates all contribute to the health of the stock market. Moreover, the country's property markets are not financed by foreign credit and is thus protected from currency devaluation characteristic of that experienced by Southeast Asian countries.
