Wai Kee leads to China

Wai Kee Holdings of Hong Kong is one of the region's most successful holding companies with large investments in civil engineering, quarrying firms, and toll-road firms. The firm owns some HK $1.5 billion in Road King Infrastructure and has a reported revenue of HK $1.328 billion in 1997 alone. However, analysts caution investors not to rush in and buy is shares since the figures are only a paper value and determining what the firm is really worth may be more difficult.

Seapower ekes small gain: flexibility helps fund skirt trouble spots
Article Abstract:
Seapower Asian Smaller Companies Growth Fund was able to register a profit despite the ongoing currency crisis in Asia. Fund manager Simon Lee maintains that the size of the fund gave him greater flexibility to dart in and out of companies as he wishes. Lee maintains however, that the size of the fund has decreased from a high of $9.8 million to $5.8 million and that the long term prospects for the region are bleak.

Thailand's Finance One PCL is set to merge with Thai Danu Bank in an effort to prevent an imminent collapse. Finance One's owner Pin Chakkaphak had built his financial empire based on inflated values for nonproductive assets while ignoring risks. As a result, the company's stock price declined 85% in early Apr 1997 to 23.75 Thai baht and net profit decreased 25% to $57.6 mil in 1996 from the previous year.
