Tet spending spree wanes
Article Abstract:
The restrained spending during Vietnam's Lunar New Year, Tet, in 1998 served as another sign that the country's economic boom is foundering. According to Nguyen Linh, managing director of SRG Vietnam Ltd, consumer confidence is at its lowest stage. He adds that rice farmers will bear the brunt due to lower rice exports. Higher prices may have also dampened consumer spending. The Tet serves as a barometer of rural and urban condition since it is the one time of the year that both farmers and urban residents go on a buying spree.
