Working together for the common good
Article Abstract:
Many businesses in the Manchester, England, area are currently showing poor performance figures following difficult market conditions in 1998. Investment bankers in the region must decide whether the slump in performance is temporary, or whether it represents a longer-term change. Merger and acquisition transactions undertaken in the area have become increasingly complex and diverse over recent years, and competition between leading investment banks, including Barclays, Bank of Scotland and NatWest, has created some substantial advantages. Whatever the range of transactions in the near future, Manchester's senior debt market will meet the challenge.

Harris slams rumours of HSBC's demise
Article Abstract:
HSBC Investment Bank executives strongly deny media reports that HSBC is to sell off its investment bank subsidiary. They maintain that pre-tax profits of 216 million pounds sterling in 1997 made it one of the most profitable parts of the group, and that the investment bank has a very good relationship with its parent company. HSBC Investment Bank Chief Executive Keith Harris says the company inherited a client list consisting mainly of medium-sized UK companies, but that it is increasingly working on larger projects and expanding its European merger and acquisition work.
