Textile talks tie up China's WTO goal
Article Abstract:
China's revived efforts at joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) remains uncertain as it fails to discuss a renewal of the bilateral textile agreement with the US. The US maintains that China's accession to WTO and the bilateral textile agreement are overlapping and cannot be resolved separately. China intends to welcome a US negotiating team at a time that is mutually convenient to both parties. However, its panel will be led by Long Yongtu of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation although the US' Rita Hayes hopes to have Trade Minister Wu Yi as her counterpart.

Ambivalence pervades ties between China and U.S
Article Abstract:
The U.S.'s attempts to improve its relations with China have failed to bring concrete results. U.S. National Security Adviser Anthony Lake and Sec. of State Warren Christopher's meetings with their Chinese counterparts have produced results that are more of form than substance. The U.S. officials blame China's increased concern over protocol, coupled with their differences over the their treatment of Taiwan, are hindering the creation of a coherent China policy.

Christopher hopes meeting with Qian will spur further talks
Article Abstract:
The impending meeting between US Sec. of State Warren Christopher and China's Foreign Min. Qian Qichen is hoped to lead to improved Sino-American relations. The meeting between the two represents the only chance for the US to restore US-China ties. The strain in the relations between the two countries was sparked by incidents which China has perceived as acts of meddling by the US, such as the private visit of Taiwanese Pres. Lee Teng-hui to the US.
