Toothpaste sales account for 54.5% of the UK oral hygiene market, with total toothpaste sales rising by 40.4% from 188.6 million pounds sterling in 1992 to 264.8 million pounds sterling in 1996. Awareness of oral hygiene and increased dental costs have led to a greater interest in teeth cleaning. The introduction of specialized toothpastes has seen the largest family toothpaste sector loose its share of the total market from 54.8% in 1992 to 36.4% in 1996. Children's toothpaste saw a value rise of 330.2% from 4.3 million pounds sterling in 1992 to 18.5 million pounds sterling in 1996.
