Thai elections give big lift to opposition
Article Abstract:
The New Aspiration Party of Chavalit Yongchaiyudh is leading over former Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai's Democrat Party, making it likely that it will get the first chance to form a governing coalition and assign cabinet positions. Chavalit has pledged during his campaign that he will install professional managers to key cabinet positions in charge of economic policy. This, and the fact that parties that will be included in the new coalition government are aspiring for the posts, quashed the plan of Amnuay Viravan, who is expected to head economic policy in the new government, to appoint nonpoliticians to head the ministries of foreign affairs, industry and commerce.
