Thailand's defense minister strengthens position with picks for military posts
Article Abstract:
Thai Defense Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has appointed his personal picks for key positions in the Thai military to show other politicians and keen political observers that he will not tolerate the intervention of former military leaders. He sidestepped outgoing army chief Wimol Wongwanich's choice for deputy army chief, Gen. Paiboon Aimpun, and instead assigned Gen. Pramon Phalasin to the post. However, he appointed Gen. Paiboon as the permanent secretary of the defense ministry, a nonpolitical position.

Note auction in Thailand is a step toward establishing rate benchmarks
Article Abstract:
The Bank of Thailand has decided to sell about $403.7 million worth of government bonds to serve as a benchmark for the domestic short-term bond market. The bank auctioned off one-month, three-month, and six-month notes on Aug. 4, 1995. Investment advisers noted, however, that the issuance of the bonds will not immediately result in a benchmark and that the Bank of Thailand needs to issue more bonds with different maturation periods to expedite the establishment of benchmarks.
