U.S. admiral urges dialogue in dealing with China's military presence in Asia
Article Abstract:
US Pacific Command Commander-in-Chief Adm. Richard Macke believes that the US and its allies should not be excessively alarmed over China's growing military strength. Macke stated that a military buildup would only be counter-productive and that dialogue would yield better results than isolation or confrontation. The admiral went as far as to advise Philippine Pres. Fidel Ramos, who recently accused China of encroaching on Philippine territory, to seek a diplomatic solution to the dispute. However, Macke also agreed that China's decision to build new structures in a part of the Spratly Islands located within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone was a matter of serious concern.
