That dreadful smog is back
Article Abstract:
Indonesia has been affected by smog but the government is seeking to tackle the problem and has suspended business licenses for four companies running plantations which have allegedly set fires in Sumatra. The managers could be imprisoned and the companies fined. Plantation companies can clear land easily by using fires, but the resulting smog in 1997 led to a ban. There have been few prosecutions since the ban, but there is concern that the problem could be serious in 2000 due to dry weather and fires starting earlier than usual.

At war in the northern woods
Article Abstract:
The lumber industry of Minnesota has been underpressure from environmentalists seeking to control the sale of timber from public lands. Logging on private lands has increased, but margins for independent loggers have dropped, partly because shorter-term contracts are used, and because mild winters hamper harvesting, and debt is being accumulated by loggers to purchase more efficient machinery. Loggers are also taking legal action against the Forest Service and environmentalists over lost income from delayed sales of timber.

Through the glass, darkly
Article Abstract:
Forest fires in Indonesia are causing pollution problems in the region, affecting Malaysia, Brunei, and other neighboring countries. The tourist industry in the region could be affected, and there are also health risks from smog. There has been little attempt to tackle the problem in the Association of South-East Asian Nations, and aid is pledged to Indonesia despite donors' concerns about environmental issues. The fires look set to continue, and their impact could be lessened if there is heavy rain.
