The incredible shrinking primaries
Article Abstract:
US primaries are gripping affairs, and start with debates in New Hampshire and selections in Iowa in Jan 2000, ending in New York and California in Mar 2000. Party nominations used to take longer, and states have gradually brought forward primaries in order to boost influence over the selection process. A shorter contest means that outsiders have less chance of winning, though campaigns last longer as candidates seek to secure funds beforehand. Organization may be more important with the speed of the season, though the outcome is not guaranteed.

In the heartland, contrary wins
Article Abstract:
George W Bush and Al Gore have performed well in Iowa, and they face a primary in New Hampshire. Less than 10% of Iowa's registered voters turned out for the election, and labor unions backed Al Gore, which was important in a state that is heavily unionized. Organizational power has been important in Iowa, and this may be true for the US as a whole. Economic issues may receded in importance, since the US economy has performed well for a long time, and personalities may have become more important, which could benefit Bush.
