The concept of the single market throughout the European Union (EU) seemed to be a good idea, but the controversy over the EU's handling of the closure of a Renault plant in Belgium brings the concept into question. The single market has improved the economy of Europe, but state aid is still an issue.

Europe's central banks are haggling over the planned TARGET system, which will speed high value payments across international borders between banks once the European single currency is established. There is disagreement over, among other things, who should have access to the system.
