The continent's jubilant left breaks free

Article Abstract:

The political left is in control of 13 governments of a total of 15 in the European Union (EU), excluding Ireland and Spain. There has been a new emphasis on employment, and Germany and France are among the countries calling for job creation. There are rules to prevent governments developing large budget deficits, and tight monetary policy would also provide a constraint. Governments cannot boost employment by increasing demand when the cause of unemployment is structural constraints such as inflexible wages.

The left at a loss

Article Abstract:

Many once popular parties of the left in Europe, including France's Socialist Party and Germany's Social Democratic Party, have lost much of their appeal at the ballot box. Hard-line Marxist dogma is especially unpopular, due in part to the global collapse of communism.
