The Brussels lobbyist and the struggle for ear-time
Article Abstract:
Stanley Crossick was a key figure in the development of lobbying in the European Union (EU), and established lobbyist-for-hire as a profession. He set up a law firm in Belgium in 1977, selling a half share to an international consulting concern in 1987. Lobbying has become increasingly important in the EU. Hired lobbyists are justified in that a range of professional skills is needed for major lobbying efforts. The European parliament's power is increasing and this means that lobbying is becoming more necessary.

Euro-apathy
Article Abstract:
There has been a low turnout for elections to the European Parliament in Jun 1999, with only 49% of the elctorate voting, a figure that has dropped since 1979. This gap between the electorate and institutions of Europe appears to be widening. The European Commission and governments of countries that are members of the European Union (EU) need to make the EU more popular. Time is needed for a European identity to develop, and it has to emerge from small practical experiences rather than being imposed from above.

David O'Sullivan, Eurocrat-in-chief
Article Abstract:
European Commission employee, David O'Sullivan, argues that it is a prity that all European Commissioners should have been affected by allegatios of corruption. The reputation of the commission as a whole has suffered as a result of the allegations, though not all commissioners were guilty. Sullivan has been chosen to head the cabinet of the new commission head, Romano Prodi, who aims to give the staff of the commission a more European stance, rather than selecting on the basis of national quotas.
