The last plantation
Article Abstract:
Thousands of African American farmers took legal action against the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1997, alleging discrimination over aid. A report for the USDA of that year concluded that discrimination had occurred, and the lawsuit was settled, but the farmers argue that the settlement of $400 million is inadequate. The agreement would have given $50,000 to from 2,000 to 4,000 farmers, with forgiveness for outstanding loans. The case is being held in Washington DC. The National Black Farmers Association president, John Boyd, argues that the settlement does not tackle the issue of racism in the USDA.

Cull MAFF
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries andFood (MAFF) has been criticised for secrecy and lack of coordination with the Department of Health during the outbreak of mad cow disease. This secrecy meant that the epidemic lasted longer, and the cost of dealing with it was greater. The cost in terms of human lives has yet to be assessed due to the long incubation period of the disease. Food safety could be dealt with by a Food Standards Agency, which the government has promised by has delayed creating. Other tasks of MAFF could be taken over by other bodies, and MAFF itself could be wound up.
