The common agricultural policy agreement reached by the European Community may not be completely satisfactory to the US, but it is imperative that the US accept the plan. If not, the Uruguay round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade talks are sure to completely fall apart.

Farm protectionism has existed throughout history, seemingly immune to the economic interests of any given era. The farm lobby remains very powerful, but as the general public is made more aware of the costs of subsidies and price supports, there is more hope for reform.

Australian farmers are angry over the agricultural policies of the European Community (EC) and the US. Agricultural interests in Australia believe that the EC's and US's predatory dumping and subsidy policies do serious economic harm.
