The Czech Republic: activity in the banking sector
Article Abstract:
The banking sector in the Czech Republic is attracting the attention of potential foreign investors, even though its reputation declined over 1996. There have been a number of significant developments recently, including the apparent decision by the government to go ahead with plans to privatise up to one-fifth of leading lender Komercni banka. It is possible that this deal will be handled by UBS. It is also possible that a merger will take place between Ceska Sporitelna and Ceskoslovenka Obchodni Banka.

Progress is also being made with plans to undertake the $1 billion sale of Bank Handlowy, the third-largest bank in Poland.
