Britain: plodding the course
Article Abstract:
The UK has been in the forefront of the European Community-wide movement to liberalize national markets to promote efficiency. The UK has been aggressive in privatizing state-owned industries and deregulating important economic sectors such as the financial services industry. Critics contend that the UK faces major challenges from a 7.6% inflation rate, a 20 billion pounds sterling trade deficit, and a labor force that is unqualified to meet the pressures of the imminent single European market of 1992. Despite these problems, experts predict that the single market will be of benefit to the UK's economy, particularly its services industries, since the UK has the most highly internationalized economy in the European Community.

Scooping up the youth market
Article Abstract:
Scoop News & Music founder Michael Sombart established his firm so he could tap into the European youth market by publishing a monthly magazine for children between nine and 14. Scoop, which has a subscription rate of 30,000, features stories on children's problems, and also includes competitions and games. Sombart believes Scoop is a success because children buy it themselves and are not given copies through libraries or schools. Sombart's future goal for his firm is to develop publications to maintain readers as they mature. He plans to create a Scoop offshoot in Sep 1990 for older teens.
