The Economic Community of West African States: status, problems and prospects for change
Article Abstract:
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is an attempt of 16 member countries for regional economic integration which has survived beyond expectations. Many factors are working against the integration such as the newly-regained independence of the West African states and lack of cohesive government infrastructure. Similarities between ECOWAS and EC include the aim for a common market and the slowness in implementing policies that satisfy basic treaty requirements. ECOWAS is projected to be a significant force in the global market.
