Four multinationals - Colgate-Palmolive, Henkel, Lever and Procter & Gamble - dominate the French detergents market, with more than 90% of the market in value terms cornered by the subsidiaries of the those four companies. Minor players are left with 5.3% of market value sales in 1997, while private label products accounted for only 2.8%. Manufacturers, meanwhile, have initiated a review of their product lines in response to growing consumer preference for standard large format boxes. The aim is to reduce and simplify the number of products available under each brand.
