Profit margins within France's textile washing products market vary between sectors. (The French market is divided into three sectors: detergents, softeners and "others"). The detergents sector offers the lowest margins, on average, largely on account of the intense competition in the sector and the sector's maturity. Softeners offer slightly higher margins than detergents, but the range is more limited because of restricted product diversity. The "others" sector provides the highest margins, which could run a high as 70% of the retail price. This is not surprising because of the sector's higher level of innovation and lower frequency of purchase in general.

France's textile washing products market will shrink by 0.5% in real value terms to FF9,782.1 million between 1997 and 2002, predicts Euromonitor. The market will be hard put to report a positive growth during that period considering its maturity and the fact that France is still reeling from the effects of the last recession. The uncertain impact of the country's entry into the European Monetary Union on the French economy also comes into the equation. Manufacturers will have to come out with products offering increased convenience, effectiveness and added value to promote future growth.
