The French pasta market

The pasta market in France has a penetration level of more than 90%. The dry pasta sector leads with 94% of volume sales in 1995 but has been gradually losing share to fresh pasta. Fresh pasta is the fastest growing sector between 1991 and 1995. France is the second largest European consumer of fresh pasta, next only to Italy. The pasta market is expected to post moderate overall growth between 1995 and 2000 with volume sales increasing by 11%.

A market research for dry and wet pasta in Germany based on the 1993-1997 data revealed that the market is becoming more polarized and has reached 277,400 tons in 1997. The industry is dominated by Barilla GmbH, BSB Narungsmittel GmbH and 3 Glocken GmbH. Pasta is primarily sold through hypermarkets, which accounted for 45% of volume sales in 1997. Market growth is expected to continue over the 1997 to 2002 period.
