Hamburger chains in Germany attains the highest turnover in the local burger sector, achieving an increase of 44.7% in value sales on 1993 levels, at DM4,250 million in 1997. The growth between 1993 and 1997 has been achieved despite the BSE crisis and the growth of other fast food sectors such as pasta, pizaa and ethnic fast food. McDonald's continues to lead the local hamburger market, both in terms of turnover and number of outlets. The demand for healthier food alternatives has prompted the launch of chicken and fish into burgers, and vegetarian burgers, as well.

The burger sector of Spain's fast food market is the most dominant fast food category in the market in value terms with total sales of Ptas58.2 billion in 1997. The burger sector, which represents a market share of 41.2%, reports that its sectoral market share in value terms has exceeded its volume shares by 16%. Meanwhile, the pizzas sector has experienced a decline in market share in value terms during the review period from 1993 to 37.6% in 1997. Other sectors of the fast food market has been significantly boosted by the acceptance of bocadilleria.
