The fabric softeners sector showed the most impressive growth within the German textile washing products market, posting an increase in value sales by 5.6% in the 1993-1997 period. The fabric softeners sector benefited from its improving image and its ability to maintain pricing flexibility. The sector which showed the weakest performance was the detergents sector, which experienced a decline in value sales by 9.4% between 1993 and 1997. The sector's poor showing is due to intense price wars among manufacturers aiming to protect their market shares.

France's textile washing products market grew 1.4% to FF9,829.1 million in 1997 over the previous year and 3.7% in current value terms from 1993. In real value terms, however, the market shrank 3.5% between 1993 and 1997. Value growth has been largely limited because of the aggressive competition in a largely mature market. The economic recession in 1993 also had an impact on value growth during the early phases of the review period (1993-97), with sales growing by only 0.2% in 1994 in current value terms.
