Analysis of the Italian market for mineral water shows that Italy remains the biggest market for mineral water in Europe, with still waters being the largest and fastest-growing sector of the market. Sales reached 5,819 million liters, valued at 3,952 billion liras, in 1995, up 22% from 1991. The growing demand for mineral water can be attributed to frequent summer droughts, growing concern over the safety of tap water, heavy advertising and mineral water's perceived health benefits. Mineral water consumption is expected to increase by 3% annually until 2000.
