The Italian market for household cleaning agents is comprised of several sectors namely the surface/scourer, dishwashing, polishes/waxes and lavatory/bleaches. The surface/scourer sector, which accounted for majority of the sales of the market in 1997, with 37.7% in value, also listed a limited growth of 4.4% in value terms between 1993 and 1997. The dishwashing sector follows with 34% of market value or 781.5 billion lira in 1997, then the lavatory/bleaches sector with 19% of market value or 434 billion lira. Finally, the polishes/waxes sector accounts for 9.5% of market value in 1997 with 217.6 billion lira.

The firms are either big multinational companies, which have a considerable presence, or smaller domestic firms. Among the multinational firms are Colgate-Palmolive, Johnson Wax, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Bater, Reckett & Colman and Benckiser-Mira Lanza. Meanwhile, some of the smaller firms that compete with the other group by focusing on private label products are Scala Annunziata, Serani F'illi and Sodalco.

Due to the wide array of products under the general purpose cleaners sector, it accounts for majority of the market, with 43.1% of the overall value in 1997. Value sales of general purpose cleaners also indicate increased sophistication despite immobile volume sales, due to product launches and major advertising activities.
