The Italian market for tobacco: key trends
Article Abstract:
Volume sales of tobacco products in Italy fell for the first time in 1996 apparently on account of government health warnings. Between 1993 and 1997, volume sales of tobacco only increased by 0.6% to 90,578 tonnes. Of the three tobacco sectors - cigarettes, cigars and smoking tobacco - cigarretes are by far the largest, accounting for 98.9% of volume sales in 1997. Philip Morris is the leading cigarette manufacturer, cornering 55.2% of the market in 1997 in value terms. In contrast to the flat volume sales increase, value sales have increased by 28.4% to L20,019 billion between 1993 and 1997.

The Italian market for tobacco: outlook: trends to watch
Article Abstract:
Volume sales of tobacco products in Italy are projected to drop by 5.3% between 1997 and 2002 on account of growing health awareness and further restrictions on public smoking. The cigarette sector is expected to maintain its dominance of the market, with a projected 98.8% share of market value sales by 2002. Full-flavor tobacco products will continue to lose market share in favor of light tobacco products. Tobacconists will remain the main distribution channel for tobacco products.
