The Italians: the best Europeans?
Article Abstract:
Italy's current economic boom is attributed in part to business applications of personal qualities such as: adaptability, pragmatism, imagination, courtesy and talent in handling people, creativity, humility, and human warmth. The ability to fashion compromises, market acumen, and a low level of national consciousness have also served Italian business interests. Italian products, executives, and investments are spreading across European borders and beyond, reflecting Italy's status as a 'transformation' economy with few raw materials and a small domestic market. Italy's share of world manufactured exports has risen to 8.1 percent, inflation has fallen from 22 to 4.5 percent, and its entrepreneurial economy thrives on a 20 percent national income savings rate. The underground, or 'black', economy is said to employ up to eight million Italians and accounts for an estimated 15 to 40 percent of the Italian gross national product.

The Channel Tunnel: the critics aim their big guns
Article Abstract:

Opponents of the tunnel fear that it will create an economic disaster with high unemployment at Dover, that it will bring disorder to the market, and that a fixed link between England and Europe could be used as an invasion route, and as route for the spread of diseases and alien cultures. Proponents of the Eurotunnel state that it will bring new jobs and investment, will increase the efficiency of transport between Europe and England, and will trigger new jobs and business .
