The Japanese take a second look
Article Abstract:
Japanese companies are expanding efforts to establish themselves in the European Community (EC) because the believe that the single European market of 1992 will create a market which can be exploited and as a defense against protectionism in Europe. This expansion is reflected in in statistics which indicate that the yearly flow of Japanese investment in the EC reached $7.7 billion in the first half of 1989, up from $2 billion in all of 1985. Figures also indicate that EC investment accounts for 17% of Japan's external assets. Some observers feel EC countries may deal with Japan separately after 1992, regardless of their presence in the EC. To be successful, Japanese corporations will have to cease being insular and recruit EC-member state personnel.

Europe's insider
Article Abstract:
Societe Generale de Belgique (SGB) chair Etienne Davignon, former European Community commissioner, is known as a strong negotiator and deft builder of alliances. Davignon has excellent political contacts and has worked closely with Chief Executive Officer Herve de Carmoy in reorganizing the conglomerate into 12 strategic groups. His efforts have turned the company around, making it profitable in the first half of 1989. Three goals Davignon has set for SGB are: creating a common culture to encourage synergy among the conglomerate's elements; instilling a European consciousness in strategic thinking; and making SGB known for its economic performance and not merely its size.
