Philippine Pres Glorio Arroyo's efforts to negotiate peace with rebel groups have been undermined by a surprise attack on armed forces on the island of Jolo. It is thought supporters of former Moro National Liberation Front leader Nur Misuari carried out the attack.

Hopes of a permanent peace in Mindanao, Philippines, seem unlikely despite the ceasefire agreed on Aug 7, 2001, by the rebel Moro Islamic Liberation Front. It is unlikely that the guerrillas will give up their weapons.
