The Millennium bug: time runs out
Article Abstract:
The consequences of the Year 2000 computer transition problem cannot be predicted. President Bill Clinton, and UK prime minister, Tony Blair, have both spoken on the subject, but politicians have tended to neglect it. The problem could affect weaponry and nuclear power plants. Deutsche Bank economist, Edward Yardeni, foresees a recession resulting from the problem, which could last for a year at least. Work on the problem has started late, and there could be particular risks to public services, middle-income countries and medium-sized firms. Uncertainty about the impact of the problem itself could affect the world economy.

Some economic activities are more important than others, and communications, power and water are needed by businesses. Their preparedness for the Year 2000 computer transition problem varies, and most progress appears to have been made by finance, followed by air transportation, energy and telecoms Central banks have been assessing the economic impact, and financial confidence is likely to be affected by the transition, which will lead to a change in fund managers' behavior.
