Why the left isn't winning
Article Abstract:
Brazilian president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, is seeking a second term in elections scheduled for Oct 1998. Cardoso has presented the stability of the Brazilian real as his achievement, but his efforts could be undermined by the pressures on the real. Support for Cardoso is still strong, despite interest rate rises, and this may be partly due to the price stability that he has achieved. The opposition faces lack of interest in the election among many Brazilians.
