The National Lottery
Article Abstract:
The UK's National Lottery was launched in November 1994, since when it has had a severe impact on other sectors of the gambling industry. However, research shows that most sectors are recovering their sales through new products and several regulatory measures. The National Lottery continues to dominate the gambling industry, followed by football pools, gaming machines and betting. The average spend on Lottery tickets is 10 pounds sterling per month, with the highest levels among 35-54 year-olds and men.

The National Lottery survey
Article Abstract:
The weekly National Lottery draw is played by 61% of the population surveyed, with another 14% playing the game occasionally. Forty seven percent of those surveyed purchase only one or two tickets weekly, with benefit dependent people accounting for a high proportion of such players. The number of people gambling increased 17% during 1992-1995, primarily because of the launch of the National Lottery. Only 3% of those surveyed bought more than five tickets each week. Playing habits are examined.
