The PLA and China's future
Article Abstract:
China's political future will be influenced by the evolving relationship between the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Observers have already pointed out an ensuing smooth transition of power from senior officials led by Deng Xiaoping to 'tough-minded, no-nonsense pragmatists' largely coming from the PLA. While observers believe that any alliance will be structured under a military-centered leadership and shall be concerned with pro-reform policies, it is highly unlikely that any move towardspolitical liberalization will be achieved in the near future.

Path of pluralism
Article Abstract:
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Deng Xiaoping should adopt social democracy if he wants a stable administration. Deng sees political reform as a hurdle to economic development, and is trying to follow Singapore's example of the 'East Asian ' neo-authoritarian model. He, however, faces the risk of being isolated by the world community, and being harassed by continuing uprisings in China. He will also not achieve his goals of economic modernization and establishing a free market if he pursues dictatorship and suppression of human rights.

Checks and balances
Article Abstract:
Chinese Premier Deng Xiaoping has shifted the balance of political power dramatically by introducing new members to the Politburo and the Central Committee at the 14th Party Congress. Deng hopes to revitalize the Communist Party through economic progress. The new government's political ability and staying power will be tested by the increasing decentralization of China and the breakdown of the party-state.
