The Philippines picks its future

Early results in the Philippines elections show strong support for democratic candidates. Fidel Ramos, endorsed by Corazon Aquino, leads with 22.9% of the votes. Miriam Defensor Santiago, who also supports democratic reforms is second with 22.2%. Other candidates, including Imelda Marcos, lag far behind.

Statements made by Corazon Aquino indicating she did not want to seek re-election were finally taken seriously when she named Fidel Ramos as the man she hopes succeeds her as the Philippines' president. Ramos' Protestant background might be troublesome to the largely Roman Catholic nation.
