The United Kingdom presidency
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom took over the presidency of the European Union (EU) for six months from Jan 1998. The UK's priorities are monetary union, economic reform, EU enlargement and reform of policy, environmental issues and crime, and foreign policy. EU agricultural policy has to be reformed to cope with enlargement and the inclusion of central European economies. Meanwhile, UK farmers have been hit by a drop in real incomes in part due to a rise in the value of pound sterling in relation to the European ECU.

The Treaty of Nice and the EU budget for 2001
Article Abstract:
The Treaty of Nice has attracted criticism. The main concern is that the new weighting in the Council of Ministers will make it easier for minorities to use blocking tactics at a time when the European Union should be encouraging communal decisions. The European Union budget for 2001 will allocate more funds to agriculture and rural development, but these growth figures will be scaled down after 2002.
